It’s all the same thing
You can call it head height, eye level, horizon line - you can call it what you want but it’s all the same thing.
How do you find the horizon line
It’s pretty easy - open your eyes and look around you. Everything you see, at the height you see it, is the horizon line, and it’s at your head height.
The basis for perspective sketching
And this horizon line is the basis for sketching in perspective. Because the horizon line (obvious when you think about it) is horizontal. And everything that is at this height will be level; and everything above and below this line will act differently, depending on whether it’s above or below.
Lines Slanting Up or Down
Think of it as a framework - all the lines above the horizon will slant down towards the vanishing point(s) and all the lines below will slant upwards. With this you can create a basic framework for sketching in perspective.
What’s coming?
This Substack is intended to expand upon the ideas of urban and landscape sketching with minimal materials, to provide examples and inspiration.
It’s all about getting your thoughts and feelings out onto paper without too many rules to follow - this is sketching - not drawing.
Thanks for reading this and coming on the journey with me. Enjoy the journey and the destination can just look after itself.
All the best,
